Copper Peptides and Vitamin C: Together or Apart?

Last reviewed: October 2, 2026 · Written by Thomas Wilbur, founder, ION BLUE · How we source and grade evidence

The short answer: use copper peptides (GHK-Cu, Copper Tripeptide-1) and vitamin C at different times of day. Vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen, copper peptide serum at night. The reason is chemistry: copper ions can speed up the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid, especially in low-pH serums. That is a formulation concern, not proven harm on skin, and separating them costs you nothing.

Copper peptides vs vitamin C

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) Copper peptides (GHK-Cu)
Role Antioxidant; brightening Signaling peptide studied for skin-remodeling pathways
Typical pH Low (often around 3.5 or below) Near neutral
Stability Oxidizes easily (turns yellow/orange) Stability depends on formula and pH
Best timing Morning, under SPF Night, or a separate morning step if your vitamin C is at night

What's fact and what's myth

  • Fact: copper is a well-known catalyst for vitamin C oxidation in solution. That's why formulators keep free copper away from ascorbic acid.
  • Fact: L-ascorbic acid serums are usually very acidic, which is a different environment from a neutral peptide serum.
  • Overstated: claims that vitamin C "destroys" or "strips" copper peptides on your face. We found no human study showing this.
  • Nuance: vitamin C derivatives (such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate or ascorbyl glucoside) are used at higher pH and are less reactive, but separating by time of day is still the simplest rule.

A simple routine

Morning Night
Cleanse → vitamin C → moisturizer → SPF Cleanse → copper peptide serum → moisturizer

Using a retinoid at night too? Alternate nights between the retinoid and the copper peptide serum. See copper peptides and retinol.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use copper peptides with vitamin C serum?
Yes, in the same routine but at different times of day, because copper can speed vitamin C oxidation. It's a formulation precaution, not proven harm on skin.

Copper peptides vs vitamin C: which should I use?
They do different jobs. Vitamin C is an antioxidant best used in the morning under SPF; GHK-Cu is a signaling peptide. Most people can use both, separated.

Can I mix them in my palm?
We don't recommend it. Mixing removes each product from the pH and packaging it was designed and tested in.
